Arches National Park…

After waking up pretty early and driving through Capitol Reef National Park (post coming later), I was truly anxious for a great time at Arches National Park – and I was by no means disappointed. I loved the drive through the Park, which made it very easy to check out a variety of arches and formations and that freaking balanced rock!!!

If you think you’re going to get pics of the arches without people in their clearing, you’re going to have to get there VERY early. I can’t say as I minded the people at all, however, as they provide a nice perspective to the size of what we’re dealing with.

jclroadtrip-3958Due to time constraints (and the heat), I didn’t do the hike to Delicate Arch. Instead I did a much shorter hike that took me to this vantage point. I would absolutely do the full hike that the people who can be seen in the pics did if I were to go back, however.

Perhaps my favorite part was seeing both the North and South Windows (above) and the Turret Arch (top), which I don’t feel gets the recognition it deserves. It’s an absolutely beautiful arch, in my mind.

doublearchcollageDouble Arch just takes your breath completely away – and when you see it in person you understand why Spielberg used it in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Coeur d’Alene…

I had heard of Coeur d’Alene previously because an athlete I used to help coach (Beth Buchheit Shutt) had competed in an Ironman event there. I’d heard that it was absolutely beautiful and so I knew it’d be a great spot to spend some time in between Washington and Bozeman. I was not disappointed – it’s a cool little town with a lot going on – and the lake is just insanely beautiful.

The Grand Tetons…

After an incredible day, with beautiful weather in Yellowstone (post will be coming soon), things got a little crazy in the Grand Tetons. If you’ve never experienced rain in the west, let me just tell you that it rainsĀ with passion. While that provided a little bit of a downer with the backdrops, I’m still pretty pleased with what I was able to capture…

I posted both of these just to show you how quickly the light can change on a subject. It’s pretty darn cool to go back through your photos to see that you captured this as it was happening.

I mean, really, how relaxing does that look?

Mt. Rainier…

I originally hadn’t planned to visit Mt. Rainier National Park – but ended up with some time and a student who told me that it was one of her favorite parts of a previous trip she and her family went on (thanks, Emma!). Visible from Seattle, Mt. Rainier is just stunning as you get closer and closer. And then you get to the Visitor Center (the nicest Visitor Center of the Parks I visited, by the way), and it is just all right there in front of you – and it’s just amazing.

Um, yeah, so there’s no need to even try to describe that…

The contrast of that deep, deep green with the white of the snow on the mountain along with that sky was one of my favorite parts of Mt. Rainier National Park.

Zion National Park…

Zion National Park toward the Southwest corner of Utah and it’s a pretty easy drive from the Grand Canyon. Personally, it far surpassed my experience at the Grand Canyon – and that’s saying a TON. I was thoroughly impressed with everything about Zion – the hike I did to the Upper Emerald Pool was tough but provided incredible views, the shuttle service was fantastic and efficient, the Rangers I encountered were truly helpful and the sights were just out of this world. Much like the Grand Canyon, everything just seems to be so layered – but in a vertical fashion. I’m definitely looking forward to getting back to Zion – especially so that I can do the Zion Narrows Hike – I’m definitely disappointed that I didn’t do this from the start…

The mixture of the rich, deep reds and the strong whites, along with the greens that could be found all over made for a very interesting mix throughout the Park.

I’m not sure why, exactly, but I was just captivated by the Court of the Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob from left to right). Perhaps it was just the detail in each and the varying colors? I’m not really sure, but I plan to be back again to investigate further…
